FROM INGHAM COUNTY:

Ingham County is asking for your help in maximizing internet infrastructure investment in our County.  Helping us in this process will help us get internet services to support everything from farming to Facetime with family and friends in every corner of Ingham County.  As part of the of the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the State of Michigan is receiving $1.6 billion to upgrade internet infrastructure to homes and businesses in Michigan through the BEAD program, a grant program that is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024.  To be eligible for this funding, a location will need to be unserved by an internet provider or underserved with upload and download speeds less than 100/20 Mbps.
The State of Michigan will be producing a broadband availability map in the coming weeks.  This map will be the tool by which the State determines eligible locations and will indicate if a property is served with broadband access to 100/20 Mbps, underserved with access to broadband at less than 100/20 Mbps or unserved (less than 25/3 Mbps or no service).  These maps are based on Federal Communication Commission (FCC) maps, which were developed with Internet Service Provider (ISP) information, therefore, there will most certainly be areas with erroneous service designations.
This is where we need your help.  The County can challenge the information on these maps, but we need to know from you if your service information is correct.  And, we will not have much time to do it.  Once the State maps are published, we will only have 30 days in which to challenge them.  In order to get a head start on this process, we have developed draft maps for each township based on preliminary State mapping information, which can be found here or by going to the this webpage:  (https://docs.ingham.org/Department/controller/Broadband/Twps_Unserved_Underserved.pdf) We would ask that locate your residence or place of business on the appropriate township map, and if the information appears incorrect, let us know by emailing us at inghambroadband@ingham.org  On the maps, a black dot indicates served, a yellow dot underserved, and a red dot no service.
We are working with Merit Network, Inc. an independent nonprofit governed by Michigan’s public universities, who is developing a mapping challenge and speed test website.  Once this site is up and running, which will coincide with the publications of the State maps, we will make it publicly available.  On this site, you will be able to have multiple speed tests taken automatically and indicate if your property service designation should be challenged.  So, stay tuned and thank you in advance for helping all of us get better internet service!
